Richmond Stud
Fell Ponies in Sussex
A change from breeding Thoroughbreds to owning a Fell filly, started a new venture that formed a new Fell pony stud with three foundation broodmares: all slightly individual types of the breed. Bought as foals, Gem came first, then Rachael and Jezebel in 2002.
We soon learned why Fells are a rare breed as it was 2008 before our first two foals arrived. That was thanks to Jules and her beautiful stallion Llancloudy Gabriel. Jezebel (who did not take to Gabriel) produced her first foal in 2009 to Underwoods Nimrod and then by Bluecap’s stallions.
More recently we have been very fortunate to be able to use George Guy’s and Leanne Harmans's stallions at the Severnvale Stud, and to benefit from their great knowledge and experience of the breed. We also took the opportunity to use our homebred stallion, Richmond Ezekiel. His two daughters Georgia and Hope are developing nicely. Ezekiel was gelded and lives happily in Ireland.
Our aim is to help preserve the natural characteristics of the breed, and our success at in-hand showing is an indication that we are on the right track. Once we have bred a foal the intention is to find it a lifelong home where it will be a trustworthy forever friend. We love it when the new owners tell us how much they love the Fell they bought from Richmond Stud.
